FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD DEGREE BURNS
Burns can be divided into three kinds: first, second and third degree(1) regarding first degree burns, they are characterized by eritema of skin abrasion that is the result of vasodilatation brought about by sudden thermic changes. Prolonged exposure of the skin to sunrays is a typical example of this of burn.
(1) These three kinds of burns are often classified as superficical, intermediate and deep.
Concerning second degree burns, vasomotor disturbances and the excision of the dermics and epidermis give rise to blisters caused through serous accumulations. These are painful and the affected epidermis leaves the dermis a sensitive and very highly innervated layer of the skin exposed. These kinds of lesions are caused through thermic agents such as hot liquids and direct contact with caustic substances (acids, alkalis, etc).
Third degree burns are much more serious where not only the epidermics and dermis but also the underlying subcutaneous tissue and muscles are affected. Tipical of this kind of burn is the scab, a body of necrotized organic tissue that falls away and leaves behind a granular surface forming a scar. These burns are of much higher intensity and contac with termic agents, therefore, is of a much longer duration. However, they are less painful as the nervous branches are destroyed.
